Also known as diesel or DERV – these are virtually the same fuel, but the usage of gas oil is controlled for off-road vehicles only as the tax rate is lower than regular diesel. Gas oil is more commonly referred to as red diesel or 35-second oil and is generally used in agricultural, commercial and industrial environments, whereas kerosene – the lighter oil – is more commonly used in domestic situations.
You will deduce that red diesel has a higher viscosity than kerosene, hence it takes 35 seconds to drop 50ml of gas oil into a glass, as opposed to 28 seconds for the lighter kerosene.
Why is red diesel cheaper than regular diesel?
Red diesel’s lower cost is due to a reduced tax rate, reflecting its restriction to non-road applications and certain industries.
Can I use red diesel in my car?
No, using red diesel in road vehicles is illegal and considered tax evasion. It is strictly for off-road, agricultural and certain commercial uses.
What distinguishes red diesel from standard diesel?
Chemically, they are very similar; the main difference is the red dye added to red diesel to indicate it should not be used in road vehicles due to its tax classification.
Is red diesel as efficient as white diesel?
Yes, in terms of energy content and efficiency, red diesel performs similarly to white diesel.
How should red diesel be stored?
In a secure, clearly labelled tank to prevent contamination and accidental misuse, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures to maintain quality.
