Keeping a Lincolnshire Farmer Supplied with Fuel Throughout Pea Vining Season

A local Lincolnshire farmer needed reliable agricultural fuel support during their busy pea vining season. This is a short but highly demanding period where machinery can be operating around the clock and fuel availability is critical.

Unlike a standard delivery to a fixed tank, the customer needed fuel delivered to bowsers at changing field locations across Lincolnshire. The work moved from field to field throughout the season, which meant Compass Energy had to stay flexible, plan routes carefully, and maintain close communication with the customer.

The Challenge

Pea vining season is a short but extremely demanding period for farmers. When operations are running around the clock, keeping machinery supplied with fuel is critical — any interruption could quickly affect harvesting schedules and potentially prevent targets being met at the processing plant.

We were asked to support a local Lincolnshire farmer throughout their busy pea vining season by providing a reliable, flexible fuel supply directly to their bowsers wherever they were working.

The challenge was that their location could change from day to day, with fuel needing to be delivered to different fields across Lincolnshire. The farmer provided field maps and field numbers ahead of the season, giving us a starting point for planning, but the exact delivery location depended on where harvesting operations were taking place.

Our Approach

At the beginning of the season, deliveries were made on an ad-hoc basis, responding to the farmer's requirements as operations got underway.

As the season became busier, deliveries increased to a regular Monday, Wednesday and Friday schedule, although this was flexible and could be changed depending on demand.

Because the harvesting operation was constantly moving, communication was key.

Typically, we would contact the farmer the day before a planned delivery to establish a rough idea of the area they expected to be working in. This allowed us to plan the most efficient route for our delivery vehicle.

On the morning of the delivery, we would make early contact again to confirm that the plans had not changed. The farmer could then provide either the relevant field number or a What3Words location, allowing our driver to locate the bowser quickly and accurately.

This flexible approach meant we could adapt our deliveries to the realities of a fast-moving harvest rather than relying on a fixed delivery schedule or location.

Keeping the Harvest Running

Fuel requirements naturally changed throughout the season and depended on how busy the harvesting operation was.

Once the operation moved to 24-hour working, maintaining a constant fuel supply became even more important. Running out of fuel was not an option — the farmer needed to keep machinery operating continuously to meet production targets for the processing plant.

We therefore planned deliveries not simply around when fuel was needed, but around making sure the farmer had sufficient fuel to keep working.

Friday deliveries were particularly important. Where possible, we would make sure the bowsers were full going into the weekend, helping the operation continue without disruption.

Likewise, on Mondays we aimed to make an AM delivery, providing reassurance that sufficient fuel was available as the new working week began.

The Result

By combining regular communication, flexible scheduling and efficient route planning, we were able to provide the farmer with a dependable fuel supply throughout their pea vining season.

The ability to deliver directly to changing field locations meant the farmer didn't have to take valuable time away from harvesting operations to arrange fuel collection or worry about where their next delivery would come from.

Most importantly, our service provided continuity and peace of mind during a critical, time-sensitive period.

The pea vining season may be relatively short, but when the operation is running 24 hours a day, reliable fuel supply can make a significant difference.
